Student Engagement

Print View

Student engagement opportunities offered at Bridgewater College enrich the students’ learning outside of the classroom. Students are able to connect to other students and the college through activities that are of interest to them while gaining valuable leadership experience and learning valuable interpersonal skills.

Campus Recreation

Campus recreation offers the Bridgewater community a dynamic active lifestyle by providing recreational activities, fitness classes, outdoor programs, and intramurals for students, faculty and staff. A complete list of all intramural programs are available on MyBC under Student Life/Intramurals.

Also check out the Funkhouser Center on MyBC to learn more about all of the offerings there, including group fitness classes, workout spaces and hours of operation.

Student Clubs and Organizations

The College has numerous social, cultural, religious and academic clubs and organizations. For a complete listing of clubs and organizations, please see the College's website.

Eagle Productions

Eagle Productions (EP) is Bridgewater’s premier programming body that plans and implements weekly activities for students. The group provides students with entertaining and community-orientated programs such as comedians, musicians, game shows, and much more. Additionally, EP provides a unique experience for their crew members to be part of an influential and impactful community on campus while also developing personally and growing as leaders. For more information about EP, please visit the Department of Student Life.

Student Senate

Student Senate represents the student body by presenting student opinions and ideas to the faculty and administration. The Executive Board, comprised of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Eagle Productions President, leads Student Senate. Through its own structure, as well as the appointment of students to serve on College committees, Student Senate involves students in many aspects of the operation of the College. Student Senate is comprised of students elected in the fall to represent their respective residence hall, class, or commuters. Responsibilities and powers of Student Senate include allocating funds to campus organizations, approving new campus organizations and making recommendations to the administration concerning student life. All students, undergraduate and graduate, are able to participate in Student Senate.

Honor Council

The Honor Council investigates and determines sanctions for violations of the Honor Code, which prohibits cheating, plagiarism and academic-related lying. Honor Council members are appointed by the student body president and serve, barring impeachment or resignation, from the time of their appointment until the end of their college career. Investigators, appointed by the Honor Council chairperson, assist in the investigation of cases but do not determine guilt or innocence. Refer to The Eagle handbook for additional guidelines.

Student Publications

Through BC Voice, the student media organization, students write, edit and publish Veritas, the campus newspaper, and produce podcasts and other forms of media.

The Philomathean is a journal of student papers, essays, short stories, poems and visual art published each year by Bridgewater College. “Philomathean” means love of, or devotion to, learning; the Philomathean reflects this ideal by recognizing and honoring student creativity and scholarship. A student may submit on his or her own initiative work produced for a course, or faculty members may recommend a student’s work to a faculty editorial board that selects the contributions to be included in the publication.

Music

Bridgewater College recognizes the importance of music, not only as a part of the curriculum of a liberal arts college, but also as a vital part of campus life. The following ensembles and opportunities are active participants in the musical life of Bridgewater College.

Chorale Ensembles: The Concert Choir, Bridgewater’s largest choral ensemble, is open to all students on campus. Concert Choir performs several concerts every semester and serves as Bridgewater’s ceremonial chorus, singing for several important campus events each year. Concert Choir also collaborates with other ensembles to perform major choral works representing many musical eras. The Chorale, Bridgewater’s auditioned chamber choir, maintains an active performance schedule both on and off campus. The Chorale tours regionally every year during the spring semester. We also offer several extracurricular choral ensembles, including the Gospel Choir and two a cappella groups, Chordially Yours and the A Cappella Fellas.

Instrumental Ensembles: The Symphonic Band is open to all students without audition and performs several concerts every semester. The Exploratory Band gives you the opportunity to learn a new instrument or to revisit an instrument that you have not played in a few years. The Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble and maintains an active performance schedule both on and off campus. The Screamin’ Eagles Pep Band brings spirit to athletic events including football games in the fall and basketball games in the spring. Small chamber ensembles are offered every semester, including Chamber Strings, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Handbells and other small woodwind and brass ensembles.

Applied lessons for credit are available in piano, organ, voice, guitar, woodwind, brass, string, and percussion instruments.

For more details, contact Dr. Christine Carrillo, chair of the music department.

Theatre

Theatre at Bridgewater College produces two major works each year. These productions are chosen to enhance the academic experience of direct course work, as well as to respond to and reflect upon social, cultural and political issues. Theatrical production develops student talent while offering the College community the opportunity to experience a wide array of theatre genres. Additionally, theatrical production suggests to students the opportunities offered in the field of theatre.

The student-run theatre organization, the Pinion Players, provides students with co-curricular opportunities to participate in all aspects of theatrical production, from directing and acting to designing and playwriting. Activities vary yearly, are driven by student interest, and may include full length plays, touring children’s theatre productions, staged readings of student written work, and a student directed one-act festival.
